Rebecca Staples
Parental Support Line Manager
Rebecca Staples joined Legacy Publishing Company in October 2008 as a Parental Support Line Representative, responding to calls from parents who had questions about their children’s behavior. Rebecca, who goes by “Becky,” became the Parental Support Line Manager in 2009.
“My current role is to ‘help the helpers,’ in a way,” says Becky. She’s often on the line taking calls right alongside the Support Line Representatives. She also helps organize the department schedule and makes sure her team has what it needs in terms of support. Sometimes that means planning a team meeting where they can all spend time talking about challenging questions and cases. Becky also monitors calls to make sure the Support Line team is being consistent in its advice to parents.
“Our main role is to help our customers get the most out of the Legacy program they’re using. Our goal on the Support Line is to help them use the program tools effectively in their specific situation. For example, a parent will call in who’s not sure how to use consequences with their teen. We can help talk about what that might look like and give them tools they can use right away, as soon as they get off the phone. Other times, people call in to talk through a tough situation; our role is to listen and help them figure out what they should do next. In fact, a big part of what we do is listen and support parents. We also coach people on the program tools.”
Rebecca has been working with families and children for years in different capacities; her love of helping people led her to Legacy. She received her undergraduate degree from Smith College in Massachusetts in elementary education and spent time working with kids in a classroom setting. Later, she went to grad school in North Carolina and got her Master’s in Counseling. Becky worked at a Hospice doing grief work with children and families for five years before moving back to New England. “I really enjoyed working at Hospice,” says Becky. “I like giving hands-on help. But eventually, I found I was ready for a break so I decided to move closer to home.”
Here at Legacy, Becky and the Support Line Staff spend the majority of their time helping parents with tools from The Total Transformation Program. “I really like the way James Lehman delivers common sense advice. I think that these tools really connect with a lot of families in a way that helps situations turn around very quickly. It’s really exciting when parents start seeing results.”
What does Becky like most about her job at Legacy? “I love the people I get to talk to each day—and that means everybody. The Support Line team I work with is just a wonderful group of people. And I really enjoy meeting and talking with parents and helping them think through how to approach something in a different way. People literally call us from all over North America—and sometimes even from overseas. It’s neat to think about going home at the end of the day and saying, ’Gosh, I just talked to somebody in Colorado; I just helped a parent in South Korea.’”
After work and on weekends, Becky spends time with her family and her pets. “I’m a huge animal person,” she says with a smile. “This is my first time living by the ocean, and I love it. I really enjoy walking my chocolate Lab mix on the beach, going to my family’s lake house with my sisters and parents and exploring places Maine.”
